Thirty-five volunteers from Asian Youth Ambassadors (AYA) made their way to Panchor, Muar on 11 April 2007 to present the support raised in the form of cash and gift packages to eight primary schools that were affected by the December 2006 floods.
Working closely with the Johor State Education Department (JPNJ) and Muar District Education Office (PPDM), a special presentation ceremony was held at SK Kota Raja, Panchor, one of the schools receiving the aid. This project was a follow-up from the recently concluded AYA Festival 2007 event previously held at the Putra Indoor Stadium, Bukit Jalil on February 2 and 3 which saw more than 2,000 people attending both nights of the concert. A total of RM10,700 raised from the AYA Festival 2007 was channeled towards efforts to aid flood victims in Johor, specifically the school-going children.
Aptly titled “Project Ke-Cheer-iaan” (Project Cheer), this fund-raising effort went in support of one of the projects by the Johor State Education Department (JPNJ) and the Muar District Education Office (PPDM), called “Program Kecemerlangan UPSR Sekolah Rendah Terlibat Banjir Daerah Muar”. This program was aimed at helping Standard Six students from the affected schools to purchase UPSR revision books.
The schools involved from the Muar District were SK Kota Raja, SK Penchu, SK Liang Batu, SK Seri Ma’amor, SK Panchor, SJK(C) Ai Hwa, SJK(C) Kung Yu, and SJK(T) Ladang Lanadron. A total of 214 Standard Six students received the cash contribution of RM50 per person for the purchase of the said books.
A mock cheque of RM10,700 was handed over by the founding director of AYA, Kenneth Chin to Encik Yazid bin Md. Said, on behalf of the Director of Johor State Education Department. In addition, gift packages containing school stationery and cookies, sponsored by YOSOGO Writing Instrument Sdn. Bhd. and The Famous Amos Chocolate Chip Cookie Corp (M) Sdn. Bhd., were also handed out to headmasters from the respective schools and Standard Six students who were present. |
