As I was reflecting back on a paintball outing that took place sometime back, I realised that there are many comparisons of paintball to our Christian walk. I will put down seven of them:
1. You cannot shoot without pellets/ bullets
Some of us could not really play on in the game because we were out of pellets. Ammunition is important. Having the word of God in our lives is important! Having sufficient time to reload (or rest and recharge in His presence) is important.
2. You cannot advance far without a strategy
It is hard to win a war when every person on the team does his or her own thing, without working together. Having a strategy helps in advancement. It confuses the enemy too! And we win with minimal lost.
3. You cannot work alone
We must play as a team. You cannot achieve much by working alone. In fact, you probably get hit the hardest and most when you work alone.
4. Good communication is important
It can be frustrating when the game is in progress and you realise that you cannot communicate with your team members because “everyone is everywhere.” Communication is key here for all to move in the right direction.
5. Putting on protective gear is important
Ephesians 6 talks about putting on the armour of God. Our journey with Christ involves being well prepared and protected from the evil one. We cannot live without the word of God and his spirit in and over our lives.
6. You cannot be on the field forever!
When one is hit, he or she needs to either get off the field or go back to the base to start again. I think of someone “taking a breather” or recovery when one has been hit hard by the enemy in the spiritual realm.
7. You need to follow instructions well
One of the most serious instructions given in the game was “DO NOT remove your mask as long as you are outside the netted area!” This instruction rings in your mind because it could cause you your eyesight if not followed.
As I close this portion, I’d like us to remember that our God is also termed as “The Lord mighty in battle!” War in the bible times did not consist of guns and pellets but of swords, shields, stones, big gates and doors, etc. Psalm 24:7-8 reveals this to us as it says:
“Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.” (NIV)
Be encouraged and assured that our God is mighty in battle. He has won the victory for us! Whatever our current circumstances may seem to say or point towards, our Lord is might in battle! And He’ll definitely WIN a paintball game. |
